The only way Penn can save his father, Dr. The puppeteer who actually controls the terrorist group is a man far more fearsome: the chief of the state police’s Criminal Investigations Bureau, Forrest Knox. But the real danger has only begun as FBI Special Agent John Kaiser warns Penn that Brody wasn’t the true leader of the Double Eagles. ![]() ![]() From #1 New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles comes the second novel in his Natchez Burning trilogy-which also includes Natchez Burning and the upcoming Mississippi Blood-an epic trilogy of blood and race, family and justice, featuring Southern lawyer Penn Cage.įormer prosecutor Penn Cage and his fiancée, reporter and publisher Caitlin Masters, have barely escaped with their lives after being attacked by wealthy businessman Brody Royal and his Double Eagles, a KKK sect with ties to some of Mississippi’s most powerful men. ![]() ![]() ![]() Next thing you know, I’d read all the books in the series up to that point, and I was tapping my foot waiting for the next book to be released. ![]() In for a penny, in for a pound (See what I did there?). The titles seemed kind of weird, but I needed more of this woman’s work! I bought Neanderthal Seeks Human (Book 1, Knitting in the City) and even added on the Audible Whyspersync. Lo and behold! I discovered she has a series of romantic comedies about a group of women in a knitting circle. What does a strung out book junkie do? Run to Goodreads, of course. ![]() The plot is addictive, and I tore my way through the series. Little did I know at the time that intelligent, quirky characters are a hallmark of Penny Reid’s books. I was drawn to the female main character in the book who is brilliant, hilarious, and extremely awkward. ![]() It definitely was a case of insta-love, because I was immediately blown away by Penny Reid’s fluid, witty, and extremely thoughtful writing style. Attraction is book one in the Laws of Chemistry trilogy. And it was actually only three years ago, but it seems like a lifetime ago that I found a pot of gold in the form of a YA book titled Attraction by a new-to-me author, Penny Reid. Many, many years ago, when I was but a wee lass… Where the hell did the Irish come from? I have no idea. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The City exists outside of the normal space and time of Earth. The Doomed City, however, is really their masterwork: a dense and meticulous commentary on society through the lens of a supernatural city. It is no surprise that The Doomed City is a magnificent novel, considering its authors also wrote the incredible science fiction story Roadside Picnic, of which I’ve blogged before. It is an intricate, elegant, and haunting combination of allegory, science fiction, and horror that will stay with you long after finishing. Such is the mixture of surreality and absurdity that characterizes The Doomed City, the brilliant 1972 novel by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, only published in English for the first time this year. What can be done about them? Very little, apparently: after attempts to kill or capture them fails, the government institutes a policy of “adopting” a baboon and caring for it. They appear without warning at the garbage dump by the hundreds, rapidly fanning out through the rest of the city and wreaking havoc wherever they go. The first indication that something is seriously wrong in the city is the arrival of the baboons. ![]() |
